COBRA subsidy extended through March

3/3/10 - Employees laid off in March 2010 are eligible for federal COBRA subsidies. This provision of the subsidy was scheduled to expire on February 28, 2010 but Congress passed a 31 day temporary extension of the federal program. President Obama signed this into law last evening. Eligible employees have 65% of the cost of their COBRA insurance premium paid by the federal government.

We are still unable to predict the outcome of proposed legislation to extend COBRA benefits even longer. A bill being considered in the Senate proposes to extend COBRA premium subsidy benefits to those laid off anytime in 2010.

Those not eligible for COBRA or the premium subsidy may find other options on the COBRA Alternatives page.
